Can Watching Movies Really Help You Learn a New Language?

Have you ever come across a couple of smart-looking (a. k. a. geeky) guys speaking in Klingon or Vulcan, then you already know the solution to that question. If people can learn languages which are not on this planet from watching movies, then people can easily do the same thing with any language spoken on this globe.

Maybe you have heard of people learning a foreign language by watching television or movies. Some years ago there were reports that said celebrity Mila Kunis, who is originally from Ukraine, learned British by watching The Price is Right.

That didn't turn out to be correct, but most of us believed it back then probably because it was not such a crazy idea to begin with. Many of us pick up lines or even words from movies. Who hasn't quoted a popular line from a movie at one point or another?

Occasionally we even pick up foreign phrases or words through the shows or movies we've seen. I know many children, real ones and ones who are "kids-at-heart, " who are able to effortlessly spout Japanese phrases or words. They obtained these words and phrases from watching their favourite anime.

Naturally , they can't necessarily converse in Japanese when they have to, however it was easy for them to pick up these words or conditions from the papy streaming or show they watched. This doesn't truly prove that you can learn a foreign language solely by watching films. It only proves that watching foreign films can help anyone become more familiar with a foreign language.

Many language learning centers already are using videos and digital media to help their college students learn their target languages. Some of these language learning centers make use of educational videos to teach languages. Some learning centers employ clips from movies to make learning more fun and fascinating for their students.

With movies, having subtitles can help provide language learners a clue on how words or phrases tend to be pronounced or used in context. If you just want to confuse people by spouting lines within Klingon, then by all means catch a Star Trek film and take notes.
